Context
A new initiative, Mission Senehjori, has recently been introduced to promote the growth and global positioning of Assam’s Muga silk industry through an integrated approach covering production, value addition, branding, and market expansion.
About Mission Senehjori
- The mission seeks to strengthen the entire Muga silk value chain, covering host plant cultivation, silkworm seed production, reeling, weaving, branding, export promotion, digital traceability, and tourism.
- It adopts a cluster-based development approach focused on major Muga silk-producing districts of Assam.
- Key interventions include strengthening host plant ecology, developing modern reeling infrastructure, promoting Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), and establishing Common Facility Centres (CFCs).
- The initiative promotes GI-based authentication, digital traceability, branding, and global market access under the unified “Senehjori”
- It follows a whole-of-government approach, ensuring convergence among Central Ministries, the Government of Assam, technical institutions, and private-sector stakeholders.
- The mission is proposed to be implemented over a three-year period with an estimated investment of ₹396–411 crore.
