- Built across the Periyar River in Idukki district, Kerala.
- Installed capacity: 780 MW.
- The powerhouse at Moolamattom is the longest underground power station in India.
- It also has the largest pressure shaft in the country.
- The powerhouse contains six generators, each of 130 MW.
- It has 3 associated dams: Idukki Arch Dam, Cheruthoni Dam & Kulamavu Dam.
- Among these, the Idukki Arch Dam is especially famous because it is
- among the top ten highest arch dams in the world
- the third highest in India, after Tehri Dam and Bhakra Nangal Dam
- the first double-curvature arch dam in Asia and the second in the world
- positioned between two mountains: Kuravanmala (839 m) and Kurathimala (925 m).
