About Ambazari Lake

  1. Ambazari Lake is situated on the southwestern edge of Nagpur in Maharashtra and is one of the eleven prominent lakes of the city.
  2. Constructed in 1870 during the rule of the Bhonsle dynasty, it is regarded as the oldest and largest lake in Nagpur.
  3. The lake was originally developed as a reservoir to supply water to the city and remained an important source of water for over three decades.
  4. The Nag River originates from Ambazari Lake.
  5. The name “Ambazari” is derived from the Marathi word “Amba,” meaning mango, due to the presence of mango trees around the lake.
  6. A public garden developed near the lake in 1958 has made it an important recreational space contributing to urban wetland conservation and ecological balance in Nagpur.
