The National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI), the organisation responsible for facilitating domestic internet traffic exchange and managing India’s country-code domains, recently celebrated its 23rd Foundation Day on June 19.
About National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI)
- NIXI is a not-for-profit organisation under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), incorporated as a Section 8 company under the Companies Act, 2013.
- It was established to promote internet penetration and strengthen India’s digital infrastructure.
- Its primary objective is to facilitate the exchange of domestic internet traffic among Internet Service Providers (ISPs), content providers, and other entities possessing Autonomous System (AS) numbers.
- NIXI manages India’s country-code top-level domains “.IN” and “.Bharat”, thereby supporting the country’s digital identity and online presence.
- Through the Indian Registry for Internet Names and Numbers (IRINN), it allocates and manages IPv4 and IPv6 addresses in India.
- It operates 79 Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) across the country, enabling efficient routing of domestic internet traffic and reducing latency.
- NIXI supports domain name registration in 22 Indian languages, promoting multilingual access to digital services.
