Context
The Bharat Climate Observation Network (BCON) recently expanded its presence in the Himalayan region through a collaboration between IITM and ARIES, Nainital, for the establishment of a dedicated climate monitoring station.
About Bharat Climate Observation Network
- BCON is a national climate observation initiative developed by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES).
- It aims to establish a long-term, high-precision climate monitoring framework across the country.
- The network monitors meteorological parameters, greenhouse gases, short-lived climate forcers, atmospheric chemistry, and soil moisture.
- It generates reliable datasets for tracking long-term climate trends and strengthening climate change research.
- BCON will create a national climate database to support research, climate assessments, and evidence-based policymaking.
- The data generated by the network will aid the validation and benchmarking of Earth System Models (ESMs), including IITM’s Earth System Model.
- BCON will support more accurate climate modelling and forecasting in India.
