Context

The Indian Coast Guard has recently commissioned a new Fast Patrol Vessel, ICGS Achal, at Goa Shipyard Limited to strengthen India’s coastal security and maritime surveillance capabilities.

About ICGS Achal

  1. Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has built ICGS Achal as the fifth vessel in an eight-ship series of Adamya-class Fast Patrol Vessels for the Indian Coast Guard.
  2. It will be deployed at Vadinar in Gujarat and function under the operational and administrative control of the Coast Guard Region (North West).
  3. The vessel is designed for a range of maritime duties such as coastal surveillance, search and rescue (SAR), anti-smuggling actions, interception of suspicious vessels, and pollution response.
  4. Powered by twin 3000 kW advanced diesel engines, the ship is capable of high-performance operations at sea.
  5. It can attain a maximum speed of 27 knots and has an operational range of around 1500 nautical miles, supporting longer missions along India’s coastline.
  6. Advanced automation systems onboard include an Integrated Bridge System, Integrated Machinery Control System, and Automated Power Management System for improved efficiency and control.

The ship carries about 60% indigenous content and meets international quality standards through dual-class certification from ABS and IRS.
