Context
The Indian Coast Guard has recently commissioned a new Fast Patrol Vessel, ICGS Achal, at Goa Shipyard Limited to strengthen India’s coastal security and maritime surveillance capabilities.
About ICGS Achal
- Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has built ICGS Achal as the fifth vessel in an eight-ship series of Adamya-class Fast Patrol Vessels for the Indian Coast Guard.
- It will be deployed at Vadinar in Gujarat and function under the operational and administrative control of the Coast Guard Region (North West).
- The vessel is designed for a range of maritime duties such as coastal surveillance, search and rescue (SAR), anti-smuggling actions, interception of suspicious vessels, and pollution response.
- Powered by twin 3000 kW advanced diesel engines, the ship is capable of high-performance operations at sea.
- It can attain a maximum speed of 27 knots and has an operational range of around 1500 nautical miles, supporting longer missions along India’s coastline.
- Advanced automation systems onboard include an Integrated Bridge System, Integrated Machinery Control System, and Automated Power Management System for improved efficiency and control.
The ship carries about 60% indigenous content and meets international quality standards through dual-class certification from ABS and IRS.
