Fermented Organic Manure and Sustainable Agriculture in India

Context

The Indian Biogas Association has recently urged the Government to introduce mandatory blending of 10% fermented organic manure with chemical fertilisers by 2030.

About Fermented Organic Manure

  1. Fermented Organic Manure is widely used as an environmentally friendly fertiliser in sustainable agriculture practices.
  2. It is produced through the controlled fermentation and decomposition of biodegradable organic materials.
  3. The manure is commonly generated as a byproduct from biogas and compressed biogas (CBG) plants.
  4. Materials such as animal dung, crop residues, compost and kitchen waste are mixed with water and processed in a regulated environment.
  5. During fermentation, microorganisms break down the organic matter and enrich it with nutrients beneficial for crop growth.
  6. Its application improves soil fertility and helps maintain long-term soil health.
  7. The manure also improves soil texture and supports the activity of beneficial soil microorganisms.
  8. By converting organic waste into a useful fertiliser, it contributes to effective waste management and reduces dependence on chemical fertilisers.
