Context

The Union Minister of Science & Technology recently launched the MAHA Water Mission, a national initiative to promote innovation-driven solutions for water security and sustainable water management.

About MAHA Water Mission

  1. MAHA Water Mission is a national initiative to promote innovation-driven solutions for water security.
  2. It brings together academia, research institutions, industry, startups, MSMEs, and local communities to address water-sector challenges.
  3. It supports the translation of research into scalable field-level solutions.
  4. Its focus areas include:
  5. Water resource assessment and sustainable management
  6. Drinking water
  7. Water quality and ecological health
  8. Water-use efficiency and circular economy
  9. Climate resilience and adaptation
  10. It has a proposed outlay of ₹200 crore over five years, jointly funded by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) and the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
  11. The programme will support multidisciplinary consortia involving universities, national laboratories, research organisations, startups, MSMEs, and industry partners.
  12. Selected consortia can receive up to ₹20 crore for developing, testing, and implementing high-impact water technologies.
