Context
Recently, the President of India conferred the National Florence Nightingale Award 2026 on nursing professionals for their exceptional service and contribution to healthcare.
About National Florence Nightingale Award
- The award was instituted in 1973 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to honour outstanding nursing professionals in India.
- It recognises distinguished services rendered by nurses working under Central and State Governments, Union Territories and voluntary organisations.
- Contributions in areas such as clinical care, nursing education, public health and nursing administration are considered for the award.
- Eligible nominees include nursing personnel serving in hospitals, community healthcare, educational institutions and administrative positions.
- The award is conferred in categories such as Registered Nurses and Midwives (RN & RM), Registered Auxiliary Nurses and Midwives (RANM), and Registered Lady Health Visitors.
- Each recipient is awarded a Certificate of Merit, a medal and a cash prize of ₹1 lakh.
About Florence Nightingale
- Florence Nightingale (1820–1910) was an English social reformer, statistician and the founder of modern nursing.
- She became widely known during the Crimean War for organising healthcare services for injured soldiers and improving sanitary conditions in hospitals.
- Her efforts in maintaining hygiene and systematic nursing practices significantly reduced mortality among wounded soldiers.
- She later established the Nightingale School of Nursing at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London, which became the foundation for modern scientific nursing education.
