The Gujarat government has introduced NARIT-AI, an AI-based tool to assist law enforcement in handling complex cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
About NARIT-AI
- NARIT-AI is an AI-driven investigation system developed by the Gujarat Police, making it the first such initiative by any state police force in India to use advanced technology for narcotics- related investigations.
- The tool has been developed by the Western Railway Police (Vadodara Division) in collaboration with a private firm, aiming to improve the quality of investigations and conviction rates in drug-related offences.
- It is designed to function as a digital legal assistant for investigating officers by offering real-time legal insights and procedural guidance, especially in cases where strict compliance with legal procedures is crucial.
- The system uses Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) technology, which enables it to analyse case inputs such as FIRs by referring to a closed database of Supreme Court and High Court judgments, statutory laws, and official circulars.
- Unlike general AI tools that depend on open internet data, NARIT-AI operates within a restricted database, ensuring data security and accuracy while avoiding incorrect or fabricated legal outputs.
- It generates detailed analytical reports that include identification of case strengths and weaknesses, preparation of an evidence checklist, and anticipation of possible defence arguments, helping prosecution teams prepare effectively.
- By integrating legal provisions, past case laws, and investigative procedures, the tool aims to ensure procedural correctness, reduce errors in investigation, and strengthen the overall effectiveness of the criminal justice process in narcotics cases.
