Protests Over National Medical Commission Logo

Protests Over National Medical Commission Logo

01-12-2023

News?

  • The National Medical Commission (NMC) has recently changed its logo, which has sparked a controversy among the medical fraternity.

Reasons Behind the Controversy

  1. The logo incorporated a colourful image of Dhanvantri, an avatar of Lord Vishnu who is considered the god of Ayurveda in Hindu mythology.
  2. Also, the new logo also replaces the word ‘India’ with ‘Bharat’ and does not include the national emblem.

Why are the Doctors Protesting?

  1. Religious Promotion: The presence of Dhanvantri is seen as promoting a specific religious belief, conflicting with the need for neutrality in a crucial medical institution. Dhanvantri is revered as the deity associated with Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine in Hinduism.
  2. Inclusivity Concerns: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) argues that a national institution's logo should represent and resonate with all citizens equally, without favoring any specific group or ideology.
  3. Constitutional Disrespect: The logo change is perceived as disrespecting the constitutional values of secularism and democracy, which are undermined by the religious symbolism.
  4. Contradiction to Evidence-based Medicine: Critics view the promotion of Ayurveda, a traditional and unproven medical system, in the logo as contradictory to the evidence-based and scientific nature of modern medicine..
