Context
The Kinnerasani Wildlife Sanctuary in Telangana has come into focus as the Forest Department plans to introduce safari tours to promote eco-tourism and wildlife conservation awareness in the region.
About Kinnerasani Wildlife Sanctuary
- Kinnerasani Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Bhadradri Kothagudem district of Telangana and covers about 4 sq. km.
- It lies on the right bank of the Godavari River and forms part of the Dandakaranya forest region.
- The sanctuary derives its name from the Kinnerasani River, which flows through the area before joining the Godavari River.
- It is situated near the Kinnerasani Dam and includes Kinnerasani Lake with forested islands.
- The area is predominantly inhabited by tribal communities such as the Koyas and Gonds.
- The vegetation mainly comprises dry deciduous forests dominated by teak, bamboo, Terminalia, Anogeissus, Pterocarpus, and various medicinal plants.
- The sanctuary supports diverse wildlife, including Bengal Tiger, Indian Leopard, Sloth Bear, Indian Gaur, Dhole, and herbivores such as Sambar, Chital, Chinkara, Chousingha, and Blackbuck. Other species include Wild Boar, Hyena, and Jackal.
