Context
The Tamil Nadu government recently flagged a batch of Almond Kit syrup after lab tests revealed adulteration with Ethylene Glycol. This chemical is a major public health concern when found in medicinal products.
Overview and Properties
Ethylene Glycol is the simplest member of the glycol family of organic compounds.
- Physical State: A colorless, odorless, slightly viscous liquid.
- Taste: Faintly sweet (making it a dangerous accidental poison).
- Solubility: Mixes easily with water and alcohol.
Health Impact
- Toxicity: It is highly toxic when ingested.
- Metabolism: The body processes ethylene glycol into toxic metabolites.
- Effect: If untreated, these metabolites can lead to significant morbidity and mortality (commonly affecting kidneys and the nervous system).
Industrial Applications
Ethylene glycol is widely used in industries, but it is not safe for human consumption:
- Automotive & Aviation: Used in antifreeze and de-icing solutions for cars, boats, and airplanes.
- Consumer Goods: Found in hydraulic brake fluids and inks (stamp pads, ballpoint pens).
- Chemical Industry: Used as a reagent for making polyesters, explosives, synthetic waxes, and alkyd resins.
