Context

Odisha has recently expanded accommodation and visitor facilities at Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary as part of its community-managed ecotourism infrastructure.

About Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary

  1. Location: Bargarh district, Odisha, under the Hirakud Wildlife Division, near Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi River.
  2. Area & Status: Spread over about 347 sq. km; notified as a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1985.
  3. Vegetation: Mainly mixed and dry deciduous forests, with Sal, Asana, Bija, Aanla and Dhaura as major tree species.
  4. Fauna: Home to leopard, sloth bear, gaur, sambar, chousingha (four-horned antelope), wild boar and dhole (Indian wild dog).
  5. Birdlife: The Hirakud Reservoir attracts resident and migratory birds, including crested serpent eagle, flowerpecker, red-vented bulbul, treepie, drongo and Oriental white-eye, particularly during winter.

  1. Historical Link: The sanctuary lies in the Barapahad landscape associated with Veer Surendra Sai, a prominent leader of Odisha’s resistance against British rule. Barapathara, one of his bases during the rebellion, is located here.
  2. Ecological Importance: It provides habitat for large mammals and supports dry deciduous forest biodiversity, while the nearby Hirakud Reservoir supports diverse birdlife.
  3. Conservation Measures: The Odisha Forest Department undertakes habitat restoration, village relocation and wildlife monitoring, including radio-collaring of animals.
