The 2023 Champions of the Earth Award recognizes individuals and organizations for their innovative solutions to combat plastic pollution.

• The UN's highest environmental honour recognizes efforts to tackle the global plastic crisis.

Note: Previous, Indian awardees include Indian wildlife biologist Dr. Purnima Devi Barman (2022), Tulsi Tanti (Chairman of the Suzlon Group), PM Narendra Modi (2018), and Afroz Alam, a lawyer who led the clean-up at Mumbai’s Versova beach.

About the award

1. The UNEP's Champions of the Earth award, the top environmental annual honour, recognizes individuals, groups, and organizations for their transformative environmental contributions.
2. Since 2005, it has honoured leaders in government, civil society, and the private sector for their significant contributions to protecting our natural world.
3. UNEP has launched #BeatPollution, a comprehensive strategy for swift, coordinated action against air, land, and water pollution.
