About Rani Durgavati

  1. Rani Durgavati (1524–1564) was the queen of the Garha-Katanga Kingdom (Gondwana). She belonged to the Chandela dynasty of Mahoba and was born on 5th October 1524 at Kalinjar Fort in present-day Banda district, Uttar Pradesh.
  2. The Chandela dynasty is known for building the Khajuraho temples and for King Vidyadhara’s resistance to Mahmud of Ghazni’s invasions.
  3. In 1542, she married Dalpat Shah, the eldest son of Gond ruler Sangram Shah. This marriage strengthened relations between the Chandela and Gond dynasties.
  4. After Dalpat Shah died around 1550, Rani Durgavati became the ruler because her son, Vir Narayan, was still a minor.
  5. Her ministers Adhar Kayastha and Man Thakur assisted her in running the administration.
  6. She shifted the capital from Singaurgarh to Chauragarh Fort in the Satpura Hills because of its strategic location.
  7. During her reign, the kingdom expanded. Trade flourished, the administration remained efficient, and the economy prospered.
  8. She successfully repulsed repeated attacks by Baz Bahadur, the Sultan of Malwa.
  9. After Akbar annexed Malwa in 1562, the Mughal Empire shared a border with the Gond kingdom.
  10. In 1564, she fought the Mughal forces led by Asaf Khan. She chose to sacrifice her life rather than surrender.
