Context

The traditional Tripura Sarinda has been awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, highlighting Tripura’s rich indigenous musical heritage.

About Tripura Sarinda

  1. Tripura Sarinda is a traditional bowed string instrument of Tripura and is also known as Sarinda Uakhrap.
  2. The instrument is crafted from a single block of wood and contains a hollow resonating chamber.
  3. It incorporates bamboo components and features an oval-shaped wooden vibrating chamber covered with a thin skin membrane.
  4. It has a broad open upper section, a narrow waist, and an oval-shaped lower portion.
  5. The instrument is about 65–70 cm long.
  6. Three pegs are fitted at the top for fastening and tuning the strings.
  7. The strings are made of metal, Muga silk thread, or animal gut.
  8. It is played using a bow made of horsehair.
  9. Other GI-tagged products of Tripura include Tripura Queen Pineapple, Risa, Pachra (Rignai), and Matabari Peda.
