Context

The Union Government has filled key positions in the National Statistical Commission (NSC) with the appointment of a Chair person and three Members, reinforcing the institution responsible for guiding India’s statistical system.

About National Statistical Commission

  1. The National Statistical Commission (NSC) was established in 2005 on the recommendations of the Rangarajan Commission (2000).
  2. It is the apex body for coordinating and strengthening India’s statistical system.
  3. The Commission comprises a part-time Chairperson, four part-time Members, and the CEO of NITI Aayog as an ex-officio Member.
  4. The Chief Statistician of India serves as the Secretary to the Commission.
  5. It identifies core statistics that are important for policymaking and economic development.
  6. It recommends policies and priorities for the statistical system.
  7. It develops standard concepts, definitions, classifications, and methodologies for statistical activities.
  8. It lays down quality standards for core statistics.
  9. It forms expert committees and working groups to address technical issues.
  10. It formulates strategies for the collection, compilation, dissemination, and timely release of official statistics.
