UNDP TO RELEASE GLOBAL MPI

Latest Context

Recently, the UNDP released the Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) on the state of multidimensional poverty or simply poverty in the world. It compiles data from 110 developing countries covering 6.1 billion people, accounting for 92 per cent of the population in developing countries.

Multi-Dimensional Poverty Index (MPI): It is an index designed to measure acute poverty means a person’s inability to meet minimum internationally agreed standards.  It advances Sustainable Development Goal 1, i.e., ending poverty in all its form. The MPI tracks deprivations in 10 indicators across 110 countries.

Key Highlights of the Report

  • Out of 6.1 billion people, 1.1 billion are poor. Roughly, 47.8 % belong to Sub-Saharan Africa, and 34.9% belong to South Asia.
  • Some 65 % of the remaining poor live in five countries namely, China (2014), Indonesia (2017), Myanmar (2015/16), Sudan (2014) and Yemen (2013)
  • 25 Countries have halved Multidimensional Poverty Within 15 Years. 1.1 Bn/ 6.6 Bn in 110 countries remain Multidimensionally poor.
  • Nearly two-thirds of all poor people (730 mn) live in middle-income countries, and low-income countries constitute only 10% of MPI.
  • The incidence of poverty ranges from less than 1 per cent in 21 countries to over 50 per cent in 22 countries, 19 of which are in Sub-Saharan Africa, including the poorest four: Burundi (75.1 %), Central African Republic (80.4 %), Chad (84.2 %), and Niger (91%)
  • Poverty disproportionately affects low-income countries. They are home to only 10 per cent of the population covered by the global MPI but 34.7 per cent (387 million) of poor people.

Facts Related to India

  • India is one of the 25 nations which halved its multidimensional poverty within 15 years. 415 million poor people moved out of poverty from 2005/2006 to 2019/2021.
  • Incidence of poverty fell from 55.1% to 16.4%.
  • Deprivation in all indicators declined.
  • The poorest states and groups, including children and people in disadvantaged caste groups, had the fastest absolute progress.
