Three Seas Initiative (3SI)

Context

Recently, the Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs met with the Special Envoy for strategic connectivity and national coordinator for the Three Seas Initiative.

What is the Three Seas Initiative?

1. It is a regional cooperation platform in Europe that focuses on strengthening infrastructure connectivity and economic development.
2. Main Objective: The initiative aims to expand Energy infrastructure, Transportation networks and Digital connectivity across countries located between three major European seas – Adriatic Sea, Baltic Sea and Black Sea.
3. Participating Countries: 13 European countries (all are members of European Union as well and except for Austria, all are NATO allies also) – Austria, Croatia, Estonia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Latvia and Lithuania.
4. Strategic Importance:
   1. Enhances regional infrastructure integration in Europe.
   2. Supports energy diversification and security.
   3. Strengthens economic cooperation among Central and Eastern European countries.
   4. Improves connectivity between northern and southern Europe.
