A general cargo vessel flying the flag of St. Kitts and Nevis has reportedly been boarded by suspected pirates off the coast of Somalia and is being taken towards the Somali shoreline, raising fresh concerns over maritime security in the region.
About Somalia
- Somalia is located in the Horn of Africa and has a long coastline along the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden.
- It is bordered by Djibouti to the northwest, Ethiopia to the west, and Kenya to the southwest.
- Mogadishu serves as the capital as well as the largest city of the country.
Geography of Somalia
- The country experiences an arid to semi-arid climate, with generally high temperatures and low rainfall throughout the year.
- Coastal areas have relatively milder weather due to the moderating influence of the surrounding seas.
- The northern region is marked by the Golis mountain range, while the southern part mainly consists of savannas and grasslands.
- Somalia’s landscape is largely made up of a plateau composed of relatively young limestone and sandstone rock formations.
- The country’s highest point is Mount Shimbiris, which rises to about 2,460 metres.
