About Noyyal river

  1. The Noyyal River is a tributary of the Cauvery River and flows through Tamil Nadu, eventually joining it at Noyyal village in Karur district.
  2. It covers a distance of about 158 km and is a seasonal river, with strong water flow mainly during the monsoon months.
  3. Originating in the Vellingiri Hills of the Western Ghats, it is formed by several small streams.
  4. The river passes through Coimbatore, Tirupur, and Erode districts along its course.
  5. In the past, the Noyyal was a key source of drinking water for nearby communities until the early 20th century.
  6. Many of these structures were built by the Chola dynasty between the 9th and 12th centuries to support irrigation and control flooding.
  7. At present, it is regarded as one of the most polluted rivers in India due to severe environmental degradation.
  8. Its watershed includes a traditional water management system of 32 tanks, 14 canals, 23 anicuts, and 55 check dams.
