About Noyyal river
- The Noyyal River is a tributary of the Cauvery River and flows through Tamil Nadu, eventually joining it at Noyyal village in Karur district.
- It covers a distance of about 158 km and is a seasonal river, with strong water flow mainly during the monsoon months.
- Originating in the Vellingiri Hills of the Western Ghats, it is formed by several small streams.
- The river passes through Coimbatore, Tirupur, and Erode districts along its course.
- In the past, the Noyyal was a key source of drinking water for nearby communities until the early 20th century.
- Many of these structures were built by the Chola dynasty between the 9th and 12th centuries to support irrigation and control flooding.
- At present, it is regarded as one of the most polluted rivers in India due to severe environmental degradation.
- Its watershed includes a traditional water management system of 32 tanks, 14 canals, 23 anicuts, and 55 check dams.
