Context

The Tasgaon Lift Irrigation Scheme in Maharashtra has recently received a major implementation push with the award of a contract for developing irrigation infrastructure aimed at enhancing water availability and agricultural productivity in the region.

About Tasgaon Lift Irrigation Scheme

  1. It is designed to provide assured irrigation to a command area of 2,277 hectares across six villages in Satara Taluka of Satara districtTasgaon, Varne, Karandwadi, Devkarwadi, Degaon, and Nigadi.
  2. The scheme employs lift irrigation technology, wherein water is pumped from a source to higher-elevation farmlands through a pressurised distribution network.
  3. Unlike conventional gravity-fed canal systems, it relies on electrically operated pumping infrastructure for water conveyance.
  4. Major components of the project include head works, pump houses, switch yards, rising mains, delivery chambers, and a closed-pipe distribution network.
  5. The scheme is being implemented under the Maharashtra Krishna Valley Development Corporation (MKVDC), Pune.
  6. It aims to improve irrigation access, enhance water security, and promote sustainable agricultural and rural development in the region.
