INDIA’S STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP WITH SOUTH KOREA

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday said India wants to expand its strategic partnership with South Korea in new areas such as critical and emerging technologies, semiconductors and green hydrogen to make bilateral ties more contemporary.

  1. Held in Seoul on March 6, 2024
  2. The discussions were held in previous meetings between the leaders in Hiroshima and New Delhi.

 Discussions in JCM (Joint Consultative Machinery):

  1. Wide range of topics: These include defence, science and technology, trade, people-to-people exchanges and cultural cooperation.
  2. Trilateral Cooperation: Focus on advancing trilateral cooperation and ideas on Indo-Pacific development.

 Expanding Partnership:

  1. Special Strategic Partnership: Established during PM Modi's 2015 visit to South Korea.
  2. Steady development: notable in bilateral exchanges, trade, investment, defence and science and technology cooperation.

 Expansion into new areas:

  1. Areas of interest: Critical and emerging technologies, semiconductors, green hydrogen, nuclear cooperation and supply chain resilience.
  2. Relevance: It aims to modernize bilateral relations and address global challenges.

 Indo-Pacific Focus:

  1. Similarity in views: There is similarity in the views of both the countries on Indo-Pacific stability, security and prosperity.
  2. Important Partnerships: The Indo-Pacific region remains the focus of bilateral cooperation.

 Cultural and Educational Cooperation:

  1. Visit to Gimhae City: External Affairs Minister met the Mayor of Gimhae City for cultural and educational cooperation.
  2. Shared Heritage: Gimhae-Ayodhya connection highlighted, centuries-old cultural ties strengthened.

 Conclusion: 

India-South Korea partnership is growing with a focus on modernization and cooperation in key areas. As the 2 countries deepen their ties, they aim to address global challenges while celebrating their shared cultural heritage and long-standing ties.
