Context

Recently, the Indian Air Force (IAF) participated in Exercise Pitch Black 2026, a multinational air warfare exercise hosted by Australia, aimed at strengthening operational interoperability and enhancing cooperation among participating air forces.

About Exercise Pitch Black

  1. Exercise Pitch Black is a biennial multinational air warfare exercise hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).
  2. It is the RAAF’s flagship international flying exercise, aimed at strengthening interoperability and operational coordination among participating air forces.
  3. The exercise derives its name from the extensive night-time flying operations conducted over Australia’s vast sparsely populated regions.

2026 Edition

  1. The 2026 edition is being held from 20 July to 7 August 2026 at RAAF Bases Darwin, Tindal, and Amberley.
  2. It involves 19 countries, over 100 aircraft, and more than 4,400 personnel, making it one of the largest multinational air exercises in the Indo-Pacific region.

Key Focus Areas

  1. Focuses on offensive air operations, air defence missions, and complex aerial combat scenarios.
  2. Enhances coordination among diverse aircraft platforms, operational doctrines, and communication systems.
  3. Provides training in electronic warfare, joint operations, and network-centric warfare, reflecting the evolving nature of modern air combat.

India’s Participation

  1. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has deployed a multi-role contingent for the exercise.
  2. Participation provides valuable exposure to advanced air combat tactics and contemporary warfare concepts.
  3. It also strengthens interoperability and professional engagement with partner air forces.
  4. India has previously participated in the 2018, 2022, and 2024 editions of the exercise.
