The government has decided to denotify 10 cantonments out of 58 across India with the local municipal bodies of the respective states.

About Cantonment

1. Cantonments are areas designed primarily to house the military population and its installations. 
2. These are regions with both military and civilian populations.
3. Cantonments in India first appeared during the British East India Company's reign, particularly following the Battle of Plassey in 1757.
4. The Union of India is concerned with the issue of urban self-government in cantonments.
   1. Entry 3 of the Union List (Schedule VII) of the Indian Constitution.
5. Municipal Administration: -The administration of the notified Cantonments is the function of the Cantonment Boards.
6. Cantonment Administration: - Directorate General of Defence estates (DGDE) is an Inter Services Organization of the Ministry of Defence which directly controls the Cantonment Administration.
7. Cantonments are classified into four types based on the number of people who live there.

Eligibility	Criteria
Category I	Population exceeds fifty thousand
Category II	Population exceeds ten thousand, but does not exceed fifty thousand
Category III	Population exceeds two thousand five hundred, but does not exceed ten thousand
Category IV	Population does not exceed two thousand five hundred.

Denotification of Cantonments

1. Denotification of cantonments means that the areas will now be merged with the state municipalities (local bodies) of the area.
2. After the Ministry of Defence issued the notification for the denotification in these cantonments, it gave a time of 8 weeks to raise objections if any on the entire matter.
