BRO CONNECTS STRATEGIC NIMMU-PADAM-DARCHA ROAD IN LADAKH
29-03-2024
The Border Roads Organization (BRO) connected the strategic Nimmu-Padam-Darcha road in Ladakh on March 25, 2024.
This 298 km road will connect Manali to Leh via Darcha and Nimmu on the Kargil-Leh Highway.
This road is now the third axis besides Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh which connects Ladakh to the hinterland.
Hinterland:the land behind the coast or the banks of a river, or an area of a country that is far away from cities.
The Strategic Importance:
The strategic importance of the Nimmu-Padam-Darcha Road stems from the fact that it is not only shorter than the other two axes, but also crosses only one route; Shinkun La (16,558 feet) on which BRO is about to start tunnel work.
As a result, this road will remain connected to the Ladakh region in all seasons.
The connectivity will strengthen defense preparedness and boost economic development in the Zanskar Valley.
Official statement:
DG Border Roads said that in January, when the Zanskar river was frozen, equipment and personnel were mobilized and work on establishing connectivity was completed.
He said, with the beginning of construction of Shinkun La tunnel, the third all-weather tunnel for Ladakh will be established.
