On the 10th anniversary of the Make-in-India (MII) campaign, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) highlighted that The "Make in India" initiative has significantly transformed the electronics sector.

  1. The initiative has led to substantial growth in domestic production, technological advancements, and alignment with the Atma Nirbhar Bharat vision.

Growth in Electronics Manufacturing

  1. Production Surge: Electronics production in India skyrocketed from ₹1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to ₹9.52 lakh crore, achieving an annual growth rate of 17.4%.
  2. Export Growth: Exports from the electronics sector increased from ₹38,263 crore (approximately USD 5.7 billion) in 2014-15 to ₹2.41 lakh crore (around USD 29.1 billion), reflecting a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22.7%.

Mobile Phone Manufacturing Success

  1. Domestic Manufacturing: A remarkable shift occurred in mobile phone production; only 26% of phones sold in India were manufactured domestically in 2014-15. This figure now stands at 99.2%.
  2. Manufacturing Capacity: India manufactures between 325 to 330 million mobile phones annually, with a domestic market penetration of about a billion phones.
  3. Export Achievement: Mobile phone exports surged from ₹1,566 crore in 2014-15 to ₹1.2 lakh crore in 2023-24, marking a 77-fold increase.

Policy Support and Employment Impact

  1. PLI Scheme Success: The government’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has been pivotal in this growth, particularly in the mobile sector. The scheme has helped exceed production targets, achieving ₹6,661 crore in total value and attracting investments of ₹9,100 crore.
  2. Employment Generation: The electronics sector now employs approximately 1.2 million people, contributing significantly to the economy and job market.

Semiconductor Manufacturing Initiatives:

  1. Semiconductor Base Development: Establishing a semiconductor manufacturing base has been a long-term goal for India. Recent initiatives include:
    1. Launch of the India Semiconductor Mission.
    2. Approval of five major semiconductor projects, including those by Micron and Tata Electronics, aimed at creating a robust semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in India.
