Rajaji Tiger Reserve
  1. Recently, the Supreme Court permitted the construction of a road through Rajaji National Park, while clearly directing that commercial vehicles must not be allowed to use this route.
  2. Located in Uttarakhand, the park occupies a transitional zone between the Shivalik ranges and the Indo-Gangetic plains.
  3. It came into existence after integration of three wildlife sanctuaries, Rajaji, Motichur, and Chilla, and is named in honour of C. Rajagopalachari, widely remembered as “Rajaji”.
  4. The Ganga River flows across it, naturally dividing the protected area into two sections.
  5. Forests Found: Moist Shivalik Sal forests, Moist Mixed Deciduous forests, Northern Dry Mixed Deciduous forests, along with Khair–Sissoo forests on the southern slopes.
  6. Its vegetation is dominated by Sal, along with species like Anogeissus latifolia, Albizzia procera, Albizzia lebbek, Boehmeria rugulosa, Lannea coromandelica, Terminalia bellerica, Mallotus philippensis, Wendlandia heynii, and Bombax ceiba.
  7. Rajaji also sustains rich wildlife populations, including Asian elephants, tigers, leopards, Himalayan black bears, sloth bears, civets, martens, jackals, and hyenas.
