About Peru

  1. Peru, with Lima as its capital, is the third-largest country in South America after Brazil and Argentina. It is located in western South America, just south of the Equator.
  2. It is bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the west and shares land borders with Ecuador (north), Brazil (east), Bolivia (southeast), and Chile (south).
  3. Peru is divided into three distinct geographical regions—the Costa (coastal plain), the Sierra (Andean highlands), and the Amazonia (Amazon rainforest).
  4. The Andes Mountains traverse the country and comprise the Occidental, Central, and Oriental Cordilleras. Mount Huascarán (6,768 m) is Peru’s highest peak.
  5. Major rivers include the Amazon, Ucayali, and Madre de Dios, while Lake Titicaca, shared with Bolivia, is the world’s highest navigable lake.
  6. Peru experiences diverse climatic conditions, ranging from arid along the Pacific coast to temperate and frigid in the Andes, and tropical in the Amazon Basin.
  7. Major natural resources include copper, silver, gold, petroleum, natural gas, iron ore, coal, phosphate, potash, and timber.
