About R-37M Missile
- The R-37M Missile (NATO name: AA-13 Axehead) is an ultra long-range air-to-air missile designed for beyond visual range (BVR) engagements.
- It is capable of targeting enemy fighter aircraft, drones, and high-value assets, and is often called an “AWACS killer” due to its ability to strike radar aircraft, refuelling tankers, and electronic warfare platforms.
- The missile is expected to be integrated with the Su-30MKI, as it is already compatible with the Russian Su-30SM platform.
- It measures about 4.2 metres in length, weighs nearly 600 kg, and carries a 60 kg high-explosive fragmentation warhead suitable for destroying large airborne targets.
- Its guidance system combines inertial navigation, mid-course updates via data link, and active radar homing, allowing precise targeting even at long distances.
- The missile follows a lofted trajectory, climbing to high altitude before descending on the target, which helps conserve energy and extend its range.
- With a range of 300–400 km and speeds reaching up to Mach 6, it is among the longest-range and fastest air-to-air missiles in the world, enabling interception of distant and fast-moving targets.
