Context

Recently, the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM) completed the documentation and ground verification of nearly all wetlands in Maharashtra, leaving only 11 out of 23,415 wetlands pending. The exercise aims to strengthen wetland conservation and coastal ecosystem management.

About National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM)

  1. The National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM) was established in 2011 by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) as an autonomous institution for coastal and marine management.
  2. Headquartered in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, it supports the conservation, restoration and sustainable management of coastal ecosystems in India.
  3. The centre provides scientific and technical inputs to the Union and State Governments on issues related to Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM).
  4. It undertakes research and studies on coastal resources, marine environment and environmental management.
  5. NCSCM also promotes sustainable development of coastal regions while protecting the interests of coastal and island communities.
  6. Its major research areas include geospatial sciences, remote sensing and GIS, coastal environmental impact assessment, conservation of coastal and marine resources, governance and policy studies, social sciences and integrated island management.
  7. The institution collaborates with national and international research organisations through scientific partnerships, networking and advanced research programmes.
  8. It also contributes to academic research through publications in peer-reviewed international journals.
